Behavioral Sleep Medicine

Behavioral Sleep Medicine is the field of study that focuses on the assessment and treatment of sleep disorders by addressing the psychological and behavioral factors that contribute to sleep-related problems.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I)
Insomnia is a common problem for a large number of people. However, it is also highly treatable through the use of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I). During therapy, patients learn what behaviors can promote sleep and also learn to change unhelpful cognitions (thoughts) that can interfere with sleep. Cognitive-behavioral therapy has been shown to be as effective in treating insomnia as medication, while the effects of treatment are often longer-lasting than treatment of insomnia with medication alone.
  • Support in managing Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) Individuals with sleep apnea and other forms of sleep disordered breathing often have a difficult time adjusting to using their CPAP machines or making the most of their provider’s recommendations for them. Some patients may feel uncomfortable or experience anxiety when using their CPAP masks. Fortunately, these issues are treatable. We will work with you and your provider to help get you on the right track.
  • Support in making healthy lifestyle changes
Often sleep disorders are accompanied by a range of physical health problems. For instance, individuals with sleep apnea are at a higher risk for obesity, high blood pressure, cardiovascular problems and diabetes. Often patients can have a positive impact on their health by making healthy lifestyle changes. Some of these changes may include learning to managing weight, improve nutrition, manage stress, use your sleep equipment regularly and effectively or simply learn how to incorporate your provider’s medical recommendations into your daily life. Often making these changes is “easier said, than done.” We can help you identify your goals, put your goals into action and work with you and your doctor to help you get your health on the right track.
